Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV- April 12, 2015) - Timely hitting gave West Virginia a 6-3 victory and a series win over the Savannah Sand Gnats on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Trace Tam Sing provided the key hit for the Power in the game with a bases clearing double to left.
The Power got on the board early in the game thanks to a run in the second. Michael Suchy led off the frame with a walk and scored on a two-out double by Chase Simpson.
Tam Sing's clutch hit came in the fourth inning and it gave West Virginia a 4-0 lead. It all began when Tito Polo hit an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Simpson was plunked by a pitch with two outs and Jerrick Suiter put his on-base streak at four games with a four-pitch walk. That set the stage for Tam Sing who roped a liner to left to bring home all three.
Savannah rallied back with a two-run homer in the fifth by John Mora but the Power responded with runs in the seventh and eighth. In the seventh, Pablo Reyes reached on a single, advanced to second on a throwing error, and scored when Taylor Gushue hit a single to right. In the eighth, Polo led off the frame with a walk, stole second, and scored on a double chopped to right by Elvis Escobar.
Austin Coley (1-0) was stellar through five innings by allowing just two runs on four hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts. The right-hander earned the first victory of his professional career. Savannah starter Josh Prevost (0-1) suffered the loss.
The Power wrapped up the four games against Savannah with a series victory and will battle the Hagerstown Suns beginning Monday night at Appalachian Power Park. Southpaw John Sever (0-0, 0.00) is making his first start of the season after appearing in relief on Thursday night and will be opposed by Hagerstown right-hander Phillip Valdez (no record). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. while pre-game on the Power radio network begins at 6:45 p.m.
Monday's game is the first Family Buck Night at the ballpark with $3 box seats and $1 general admission seating plus $1 specials on concessions. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the general public and 5:30 p.m. for season ticket and 25-game package holders.
