(CHARLESTON, S.C.) The Charleston RiverDogs stole four bases during a three-run fifth inning and then held on for a 4-2 win over the Lexington Legends Sunday. The RiverDogs had eight steals in the game as they gained a split of the season-opening four-game series.

With one out in the fifth, Charleston's Brandon Thomas drew a walk. After Corey Ray relieved Lexington starter Colin Rodgers, Thomas stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by catcher Kyle Pollock. Abiatal Avelino doubled to left field, scoring Thomas with the first run of the game. Avelino stole third and scored on a single by Jorge Mateo. Mateo stole second and third, and after Connor Spencer walked, Mateo came home on a sacrifice fly by Chris Breen, giving Charleston a 3-0 lead.

The Legends answered with a run in the sixth. Humberto Arteaga led off the inning with a walk and moved to second as Ryan O'Hearn reached first on an error by second baseman Gosuke Katoh. Arteaga went to third on fly out to right field by Elier Hernandez and scored on a ground out by Samir Duenez.

The RiverDogs were off and running again in the seventh inning. Avelino led off with a single, stole second and third, and then scored on a wild pitch. Mateo singled and stole two more bases, but did not score.

Lexington scored its final run in the ninth on a two-out single by Carlos Garcia, a balk and an RBI single by Corey Toups.

Charleston starter Jordan Montgomery (1-0) got the win. He worked five and two-thirds innings and allowed five hits and one unearned run. He struck out nine batters and walked one. Yoel Espinal pitched an inning and a third, and Joe Harvey worked the eighth and ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

Legends starter Colin Rodgers (0-1) was the losing pitcher.

The Legends will open a three-game series Monday night in Greenville, South Carolina. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
