Greenville, SC - Runs were at a premium during Sunday afternoon's series finale between the Greenville Drive (2-2) and the Augusta GreenJackets (2-2), but the GreenJackets took the lead in the top of the ninth and held on for a 2-1 victory in front of 5,121 fans at Fluor Field.
Augusta began the ninth inning with Andrew Cain lining a double into the left field corner off Reed Reilly (0-1). Two batters later, TJ Relaford singled him to third, and a fielder's choice grounder by Randy Ortiz brought home the go ahead run.
The run made a winner of Rodolfo Martinez (1-0), who hurled a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts. Raymundo Montero closed things out in the ninth to record his second save.
Quality starting pitching was the name of the game on Sunday, as Greenville's Jeffry Fernandez and Augusta's Samuel Coonrod traded zeroes for five innings apiece. Fernandez gave up four hits and one walk and struck out five, while Coonrod punched out seven and allowed three hits with no walks.
The GreenJackets struck first in the top of the sixth when John Riley tripled to deep center and Jonah Arenado doubled him home. They scored the first run in each of the four games in the series.
After a single by Danny Bethea in the bottom of the seventh, the Drive were granted a gift with a two-out Augusta error, and Derek Miller made the Greenjackets pay with an RBI single to center to tie the game.
Bethea and Mauricio Dubon picked up two hits apiece for the Drive.
The seven-game homestand continues at Fluor Field on Monday night as the Drive welcome the Lexington Legends, affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, to town. First pitch for Monday is set for 7:05 PM. RH Michael Kopech will start for Greenville, while Lexington sends RH Zach Lovvorn to the mound.
