Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
LAKEWOOD, N.J. (April 12, 2015) - Starting pitcher Thad Lowry got plenty of run support while tossing 6.0 scoreless innings to spearhead an Intimidators shutout win, 8-0, over the Lakewood BlueClaws on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park. Reliever Brad Salgado backed up Lowry with 3.0 scoreless frames to finish the victory.
Lowry (1-0), the White Sox No. 17 prospect entering this season according to Baseball America, gave up just three hits and a walk while striking out four in his season debut. It was the first time Lowry tossed 6.0 scoreless innings since the final start of his professional debut season when he blanked Burlington on August 27, 2013, while with Advanced Rookie Bristol.
Salgado limited Lakewood to a pair of hits over his three frames to secure the save (1).
The Intimidators (2-2) erupted for five runs in the third inning, sending nine men to the plate. Michael Suiter, Mason Robbins, and Christian Stringer strung together a trio of 1-out hits to increase the Kannapolis lead to 2-0. Two batters later, Louie Lechich added a 2-run base hit up the middle. After Brett Austin walked, Nolan Earley doubled to the gap in left-center field to drive in two more runs for a 6-0 lead.
Lakewood starter Ranfi Casimiro (0-1) worked 5.0 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in a losing effort. He bounced back from the big inning with a perfect fourth and fifth frame. Jason Zgardowski tossed 4.0 relief innings for the BlueClaws, keeping Kannapolis off the board for his first three frames of work.
Michael Suiter tripled to left field in the top of the ninth, scoring Earley and Toby Thomas to bring the Kannapolis lead to 8-0.
Kannapolis took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Chris Curley led off with a base hit, and Lechich lifted a fly ball to left field, which BlueClaws outfielder Herlis Rodriguez lost in the sun, putting men in scoring position with one out. Austin followed with a sac-fly to left field.
Three Intimidators hitters - Suiter, Robbins, and Lechich - collected a pair of hits as Kannapolis collected at least 10 hits for the third straight game.
The Intimidators open a 3-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds on Monday at 7:05 p.m. when RHP Luis Martinez makes his Class A debut with Kannapolis. The Intimidators are on a 7-game road trip to open the 2015 season before playing their home opener on Thursday, April 16, at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
