OHL Owen Sound Attack

Attack Fail to Get by Spirit

October 30, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack saw their weekend in Michigan get off to a slow start with a tough 3-2 loss to the Saginaw Spirit on Friday, Oct. 30.

Despite the Attack hemming the Spirit deep in their zone early and generating countless chances on a Baywest Nissan Powerplay opportunity, Owen Sound was unable to find the back of the net and Saginaw took advantage.

Shortly after the man advantage expired for the Attack, Saginaw was able to tip a point shot past Michael McNiven, giving them a 1-0 lead with 7:52 gone in the first.

They would then double their lead off of the stick of Artem Artemov just two minutes and 18 seconds later.

Down 2-0 at the TV timeout, Owen Sound seemed to find their legs and it would be Ethan Szypula who poked the first hole in Saginaw's armour.

Scoring his 3rd goal in two games, Szypula created a 2nd chance opportunity by crashing the net and backhanding home the rebound off of a Jaden Lindo shot at the 12:38 mark of the frame.

Josh Sterk also picked up an assist on the goal, which would send the games to the intermission with the Attack trailing 2-1.

The Attack came out of the intermission appearing to have gained the momentum they needed from their lone goal of the frame, and it certainly showed on the shot clock.

When the middle 20 minutes of play ended, Owen Sound would find themselves outshooting the Spirit by 22-12, after having put the puck on Saginaw's net 11 times in the period.

But it was one of those shots that made the difference in the stanza.

Appearing for just the 2nd time this year after breaking his wrist at the Florida Panthers' training camp, Thomas Schemitsch was the recipient of a backdoor feed by Ethan Szypula and the rangy defenceman made no mistake with Owen Sound on a Baywest Nissan Powerplay.

Schemitsch's goal, which also saw Santino Centorame pick up an assist on the play, came with just over a minute remaining in the 2nd period and sent the teams to the 3rd period in search of the game winner.

While the 2nd period was marked by Owen Sound's dominance, the 3rd saw both teams fail to find their footing in search of the game's final goal.

Despite once again trading chances on the powerplay for most of the frame, neither side was able to capitalize and when a puck found its way in to the back of the net it was off of a broken play.

And unfortunately for the Attack, that goal would be the game winner for the Saginaw Spirit, a goal that came on a bouncing puck with just 3:04 left to play in the game.

Blake Clarke would be credited with the game winning goal and that would be enough to earn him the Mac Taylor Corporation 2nd Star of the Game.

Ethan Szypula's two point outing saw him pick up 3rd star honours while Saginaw's Kris Bennett was named the game's 1st star.

The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 25-19 for the Attack.

Owen Sound has a quick turnaround with the team's next game on Saturday, Oct. 31 in Flint against the Firebirds.

Puck drop is set for 2:00pm and can caught live on Rogers Local 53 or 560 CFOS Kia of Owen Sound Terry's Trailer Service Bear Radio.

The next home game for the Attack is Wednesday, Nov. 4 against the Sarnia Sting at 7:00pm.

Tickets for that game, and all remaining Attack home games can be purchased at the DJ's Furniture Attack Box Office, online at www.attackhockey.com, or by calling 519-371-7452.
