Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI. - The Saginaw Spirit faced off against the Owen Sound Attack for the first of two meetings this season on Friday night. The Spirit headed into the game with a 5-6-1-1 record, after a 5-3 win over the Flint Firebirds on Wednesday afternoon. Saginaw recorded their fourth win in their last five games against Owen Sound Friday night, knocking off the Attack, 3-2.
The Saginaw Spirit got the scoring started by way of Kris Bennett, who was set up by Kirill Maksimov and Markus Niemelainen. Minutes later Artem Artemov followed suit and netted a sharp shot to beat Owen Sound's goaltender Michael McNiven, putting the Spirit up 2-0 over the Attack. Owen Sound put a quick stop to the Spirit's scoring, after Ethan Szypula sliced into the Spirit's two-goal advantage at 12:38 of the first period. Shots on goal during the first period were tied at 11 apiece.
The Attack firmly controlled play in the second period but was not rewarded until a power play opportunity. It was Owen Sound's Thomas Schemitsch who scored the lone goal of the second period at 19:03, and notched the equalizer for the Attack. As the horn sounded marking the end of the second period, the teams skated to the locker room tied, 2-2. The Attack outshot the Spirit in the second, 11-1.
The Saginaw Spirit turned up the tough offensive pressure in the third period, outshooting the Attack 7-3 in the last 20 minutes of play. The Spirit crowd was starting to get restless, after a majority of the third period was left scoreless. It wasn't until Saginaw's Blake Clarke ripped a shot past McNiven and netted the 3-2 game winning goal, forcing the 3,130 Spirit fans into a fit of cheers. Devon Paliani and Kris Bennett assisted Clarke's third goal of the season. Final shots on goal favored the visiting Owen Sound Attack, 25-19.
