Attack Drop Wednesday Night Tilt to Otters
October 28, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The return of Thomas Schemitsch and Petrus Palmu to the lineup wasn't enough to help the Owen Sound Attack when they hosted the Erie Otters on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
An onslaught of goals by the Otters in the first two periods of the game was enough to see the Attack fall 7-3 in their lone home game of the week.
It didn't take the Otters long to get on the board, and they took advantage of a 2-on-1 opportunity just 73 seconds into the game.
Nick Betz scored maybe the easiest goal of his career, as a Kyle Maksimovich pass bounced off of his leg and into the net behind Attack netminder Michael McNiven.
The Attack would even the score not long after though, taking advantage of a big Baywest Nissan Powerplay opportunity.
Jaden Lindo scored on a strong 2nd chance effort in front of the Otters' cage by picking up a bouncing puck and backhanding it home for his 6th goal of the year. Schemitsch tallied his first point of the season with an assist, while Ethan Szypula would also get credit for a helper on the play.
Erie would restore their one goal lead though, and it would come at 12:52 of the first on a Mitchell Byrne shot that snuck through McNiven's five-hole.
The visitors would then make it a 3-1 lead with 4:20 left in the period on a goal by Alex DeBrincat before Betz tallied his 2nd of the evening at 17:11 to make it a 4-1 Erie lead heading into the intermisson.
Betz's second goal would also spell the end of the night for McNiven, bringin Daniel Dekoning in to face his former team for the first time.
When puck dropped for the 2nd period, Erie continued their offensive outburst.
Jordan Sambrook would make it a four goal advantage for the visitors with 4:06 gone in the stanza, beating former Dekoning with a shot over his blocker.
The Otters continued to pile it on and this time it was newly named captain Dylan Strome finding the back of the cage at the 10:02 mark of the period, giving Erie a 6-1 lead before DeBrincat tallied his 2nd of the night at 13:28 to make it 7-1.
While goals can fast and furious in the first two frames, it took almost 10 minutes for anyone to find the back of the net in game's final 20 minutes of play.
When the goal clock did get lit up though, it was thanks to a slick backhander by Ethan Szypula who made it a 7-2 game on a short Baywest Nissan Powerplay for the Attack. Szypula's goal, which came at 9:17 of the 3rd, was his 2nd point of the night and also saw Thomas Schemitsch pick up another assist while Josh Sterk registered his first point of the evening.
The Attack weren't done there though, as Szypula would find the back of the net again on yet another man-advantage, this one coming at 11:36 of the game. Sean Durzi and Josh Sterk picked up the assists on Owen Sound's 3rd of the game, giving the home side three players with multi-point games.
Ethan Szypula was named the Mac Taylor Corporation 3rd Star of the Game for his three point evening, while Erie's Alex DeBrincat and Nick Betz earned 2nd and 1st stars respectively.
Owen Sound's Josh Sterk was named the Hatten Home Hardware Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game.
The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 30 apiece on the evening. For your best shot at buying or selling, contact Mark at www.markmcdade.com.

Both weekend games can be listened to live on 560 CFOS Terry's Trailer Service Kia of Owen Sound Bear Radio.
The squad will play its next home game on Wednesday, Nov. 4 when the Sarnia Sting make their way to town. Puck drop for that game is scheduled for 7:00pm.
