Flint Firebirds News Release
Saginaw, Mich. - Special teams played a critical role in Saginaw's victory over the Firebirds at the Dow Event Center on Wednesday Morning. The Spirit scored three power-play goals en route to a 5-3 win on home ice.
Alex Di Carlo scored his first career Ontario Hockey League (OHL) goal 1:16 into the contest. Francesco Vilardi won the offensive zone face-off draw back to Di Carlo at the point who rifled the puck into the back of the goal to earn the Firebirds a 1-0 lead early into the game.
The Spirit would tie the contest at 4:55 of the first period as Jesse Barwell would put home a rebound between the legs of Nedeljkovic from the left-wing circle.
Saginaw's Tye Felhaber scored the Spirit's first power-play goal of the morning on a rebound from the right side of the net at 11:21 of the opening frame.
2:49 later, Mathieu Henderson headmanned the puck to Dane Johnstone at the Saginaw blue line, who sniped the puck over the left shoulder of the Spirit's Evan Cormier to the game 2-2.
Just past the midway point of the second period, Matt Kreis would find an opening from the left circle, scoring the eventual game-winning goal on the power-play. Then, at 14:54, DiTomaso found Petschenig, from the point at the bottom of the right circle. Petschenig passed the puck in front of the Firebirds' net where Artemov redirected the disc into the cage to give Saginaw a two-goal lead and their third power-play goal of the night.
Early in the third period, a bouncing puck in the Flint zone would lead to a spin-o-ramma back-handed goal off Kreis' stick from the bottom of the right circle.
Ryan Moore scored the final goal of the game with 1:41 remaining in the contest to bring the Firebirds within two goals when he blasted a puck into the goal from the top of the left circle. The Spirit held on for their first victory over the Flint Firebirds this season. Flint currently leads the season series 2-1.
