Atlantic City Signs Velazquez, Nunez

ATLANTIC CIY, N.J. (June 25, 2003) – The Atlantic City Surf have announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Maximo Nunez and first baseman Jose Velazquez, both members of last year's squad.

Velazquez had his best year of nine seasons in professional baseball last year with Atlantic City, ranking fourth in the Atlantic League with a .323 average while pacing the league with 150 hits. Named a South Division All-Star for his efforts, he also hit 18 home runs and drove in 94 RBI.

The Guayama, Puerto Rico, native, was originally selected in the sixth round of the 1994 Major League Draft by the New York Yankees. He spent seven seasons on the Single-A level until ultimately signing with the Surf in 2001, when he hit .279 with 13 home runs and 85 RBI despite playing behind Atlantic City standout Brian Hunter for half of the season.

Velazquez played 54 games for West Tennessee (AA) in the Chicago Cubs organization at the start of this season, batting .239 with a home run and 22 RBI.

Nunez, a 6-foot-5 right-hander from Villa Mella, Dominican Republic, was one of Atlantic City's top hurlers last season, going 10-2 with a 3.43 ERA and 64 strikeouts

He spent time in the Blue Jays, White Sox, Devil Rays, and Dodgers organizations before signing with independent St. Paul in 2001 and then the Surf in 2002. Nunez has 80 games of Triple-A experience and spent 84 games on the Double-A level.

Nunez has already joined the Surf while Velazquez will be active on Sunday, June 29.
