Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors left eleven men on base, including the bases loaded in the eighth and lost to New Jersey 7-5 Thursday night in New Jersey.
The Ambassadors jumped on Jackal starter Joe Magri early, but good Jackal defense and tough luck for the Ambassadors kept the Ambassadors to only three runs in the first three innings. In the first, Marlon Roche hit a line drive that Jackal first baseman Mike Glendenning made a nice leaping grab on with one out and runners at second and third. Glendenning doubled Davilla off of second to end the inning. In the second, Dan Singletary was at second with one out and Brian Macchi and Julio Acosta each lined out sharply to the outfield to end the inning.
The Jackals struck for two in the bottom of the second. A double from Chris Rowan followed by a John Anderson triple and then a Keith Maxwell RBI groundout accounted for the scoring.
The Ambassadors got three in the top of the third. Cedrick Harris began the inning with a walk, then Jorge Diaz singled, follwed by an Ender Gonzalez sacrifice bunt. Then Davilla walked to load the bases. Roche singled to right to drive in Harris, then Singletary hit a sacrifice fly to plate Diaz. Greg Schmidt followed with a single to left, but he was caught in a rundown between first and second. Roche was thrown out eventually at the plate. Davilla scored on the play.
The Ambassadors got another run in the fifth off reliever Ken Henderson, but it could have been more. Diaz led off with a walk, then Gonzalez grounded out. Diaz stole third and scored on a throwing error on catcher Mikaela Dworken. Davilla and Roche then singled. Singletary struck out, then Schmidt was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Macchi hit a sharp line drive down the third base line that Keith Maxwell snared to end the inning.
In the bottom of the inning, the game shifted toward the Jackals. After starter Reed Harvey got two outs, Joe Kerrigan and Travis Bailey singled. Mike Glendenning then hit a three run home run to right to give the Jackals a 5-4 lead. New Jersey would add another run in the inning and another run on a solo home run by Chris Rowan in the seventh.
The Ambassadors had a golden opportunity in the eighth. Schmidt grounded out to start the inning, but Macchi then singled. He was thrown out attempting to advance on a ball that got by Dworken. With two outs, Acosta walked, then Harris doubled. That ended Henderson's night and Matt Powell came in. He walked Diaz to load the bases and then hit Gonzalez to force in a run. Ben Grezlovski, pitching for the fourth straight day, then came in and got Davilla to ground out to end the inning.
That was as close as the Ambassadors would get to tying the game, although they did have the tying run at the plate in the ninth. The loss drops the Ambassadors to five games below .500, now 12-17, seven games behind New Jersey. The Jackals are now 21-12. Henderson got the win, his first, while Harvey took his first loss. The Ambassadors now start a six game homestand against North Shore and Quebec. Tomorrow night is Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders night, with a 7:05 game time against North Shore.
