Berkshire Black Bears News Release

A tenth inning double from catcher Manny Crespo put Berkshire on top 2-1 Thursday night in an extra inning thriller. Another fabulous pitching display from both teams at Wahconah park friday night, saw a 1-1 score go into bonus baseball.

Each team's starter went deep into the ball game, Courtney Hall for Berkshire and Jerry Long for Bangor, allowing just one run a piece and combining for eight strikeouts. The Black Bears left at least one runner on base in every inning tonight, scoring their first run in the 4th, when DH Chris Briones hit a fly ball to left field, deep enough to score Ryan Jones from third. Bangor answered with a run in the sixth, with two outs Donnie Ross singled, and then scored from first on a double from Lorenzo de la Cruz. Black Bear reliever Eddie Aucoin threw an inning and third scoreless relief and Matt Smith retired the last two batters of the tenth to pick up his first win of the season. Brandon Bowe, the fourth pitcher of the night for Bangor, go the loss, as he retired just one batter in the tenth before surrendering the game winning double to Crespo. With the win the Black Bears earn a split in the four game series against Bangor and keep pace with New Jersey, who won earlier tonight.

The Boys from Pittsfield now head into a weekend series at home against Elmira, a pivotal matchup which will likely determine the #2 spot in the southern division with just under two weeks left in the first half of the 2003 season. If Berkshire can pass Elmira after this weekend, they will be in great position to challenge for the Division lead with New Jersey coming to Wahconah for three games on July 4th Weekend.
