Black Bears Suffer Tough Defeat To Close Out Season

September 1, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Berkshire Black Bears News Release

The Labor Day matinee for the Berkshire Black Bears was slightly underwhelming as the team closed out their 2003 season with a loss to the Brockton Rox, 14-6. Perhaps if the first inning was replayed, the outcome might have been different, but a 10-run first inning by the Rox set the table for a long game. Brockton sent 15 men to the plate in the top of the first, scoring ten runs, all of which came before an out was recorded. The Rox would add four runs over the rest of the game, including a 2-run home run by Jake Daubert in the top of the ninth to cap an 8-run victory. The Black Bears managed a decent showing after the first inning, getting a solo shot by Shane Hopper in the fourth and Ryan Jones crushed a two-run blast in the eighth.

Rox right-hander Joey Baker (10-4) threw five innings for the win, allowing one run on three hits and added three strikeouts. Berkshire starter Courtney Hall (2-12) failed to retire a batter and got the loss, facing nine batters, allowing all nine to score, on seven hits and two walks. All-Star reliever Eddie Aucoin threw two-thirds of an inning to ensure that he will win the Northeast League ERA title for the season.

The Black Bears (20-25) finish the second half in a second place tie with Elmira, 5.0 games behind New Jersey in the South Division, and end the 2003 season with a 41-51 overall record.
