Garcia, Dillinger Take NEL Honors

Québec second baseman Osmani Garcia and Allentown right-handed pitcher John Dillenger were chosen the Daktronics Northeast League Players of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Aug. 31.

Garcia, who turns 29 on Sept. 6 and was born in Cuba, recorded four multi-hit games out of six during the week, batting .409 (9-for-22) with three runs, two doubles, two home runs, five RBIs, a .773 slugging percentage and a .391 on-base percentage.

Garcia played two years in the Texas organization and spent 90 games in those two years at Triple-A. He played extensively for the Cuban National Team before coming to the United States and hit .278 with 22 doubles and one homer in 2002 for the Elmira Pioneers.

Dillinger, who turned 30 on Aug. 29, pitched a three-hit shutout at Bangor on Aug. 28 to earn pitcher of the week honors. He allowed three hits, three walks and struck out 16, the second-highest total by one pitcher in one game in Northeast League history. Byron Tribe of the Massachusetts Mad Dogs struck out 17 Allentown hitters on July 8, 1998.

After being drafted out of Manatee (Fla.) Junior College in 1992, Dillinger played in the Pittsburgh farm system for seven years before being released and signing with Allentown in 1998. He did not play in 1999, played in the Atlantic League in 2000 and for three different Triple-A teams in 2002 plus Allentown again.
