Ambassadors Win 5-3 in Ten, Davilla Just Misses Triple Crown
September 1, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors scored a run with two out in the ninth to tie the game, then scored two in the tenth to beat Quebec les Capitales 5-3 Monday afternoon in Quebec, with Vic Davilla just missing his shot at the triple crown.
Quebec took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run from Pappy Ndungidi, his fourth, off Ambassador starter Raphael Valdez. Valdez, the pitching coach for the Ambassadors, was forced to make the start due to an ankle injury to John Dillinger and the shorthanded nature of the Ambassador pitching staff.
The Ambassadors tied it up in the third on a solo home run from Jason Williams, his second, but Quebec took the lead right back in the third, with Benoit Emond scoring on a Eddie Lantigua single. The Ambassadors would tie it again in the seventh, a Ben Rosenthal single driving in Brian Macchi, but Quebec retook the lead in the eighth, with Emond scoring on a Osmani Garcia single off Chris Kelly, who started and pitched six innings just two nights ago.
In the ninth, Garrett Larkin doubled with one out, then after Kevin Moore struck out, Rosenthal came through again with an RBI single to tie the game.
In the tenth inning, backup catcher Peter L'Italien came in to pitch for Quebec. After walking Jason Williams on four pitches, Davilla came to the plate. He was 1-4 at that point, having singled in his first at-bat. If he hit a home run, he would be in a tie for the batting title with Dennis Abreu and the home run title with Carlos Rodriguez. On a 3-2 pitch Davilla drove the ball all the way to the wall in right-center field, but Rodriguez would make the catch and end Davilla's chance to get the first triple crown in Northeast League history. With one out in the inning, Marlon Roche then walked, followed by a Greg Schmidt double driving in two and giving the Ambassadors a 5-3 lead. Perry Cunningham, who had come in to finish out the eighth, closed out the game in the ninth inning.
Cunnigham got the victory and finishes the year with a 2-1 record. L'Italien got the loss and is now 0-1. With the win, the Ambassadors finish the second half with a 16-30 record, and finish the season with a 32-58 record overall. Quebec finished the second half 28-16 with the loss. Rosenthal was 2-4 with two RBI in the game.
