Berkshire Offense En Fuego As Black Bears Rout Brockton

The Black Bears crushed the Rox with bats' a-blazin', beating 9-1 final at Wahconah Park tonight. The Black Bears snarled at Brockton starter Greg Salvevold in the first inning, firing off five consecutive singles to kick start the first inning. Jose Mateo led off with single, Kevin Forbes followed with a single and then Shane Hopper hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Mateo from second to make it 1-0. Manny Crespo dropped a flair down the right field line, which scored Forbes and then Pete Paciorek brought in Hopper with a single to left. After Ryan Jones grounded into double play, Mark Burnett singled to left to score Crespo, giving the Black Bears an early 4-0 lead. In the sixth inning, the Black Bears a run in the fourth, and four in the sixth, capped when Hopper smashed a 2-run home run over the left fence, making the score 9-1.

The Black Bears starter, Tony Harden shut out the Rox bats until Brockton DH Mike Torres hit a bomb over the fence in center in the fifth inning, Brockton's only run of the game. Harden (9-4) picked up the win, allowing only one run on four hits, with four strikeouts over seven innings. Brockton starter Salvevold fell to 2-3 with the loss, allowing nine runs (six earned) on eleven hits over five and 2/3 innings.

Game 2 of the final series of 2003 has Rick Guttormson (8-8) vs Mike Marchesano (8-7) at 7:05 pm.
