Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, August 29-Eddy Martinez broke a 3-3 tie with a grand slam home run in the sixth inning and Jaime Navarro tossed a complete game as the Newark Bears snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating the Atlantic City Surf, 8-3, Friday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Martinez launched a one ball-one strike pitch from reliever Travis Thompson over the wall in left field for the grand slam with one out in the sixth inning to give the Bears a 7-3 lead. The home run was Martinez' sixth of the season and his second grand slam this year.
Newark took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on right fielder Hipolito Martinez' three-run home run off of Surf starter Andy High. Martinez was 2-4 on the night with his 5th home run and three runs-batted-in.
Navarro (10-4) allowed Atlantic City to tie the game, 3-3, in the third inning, though he halted the Surf comeback by retiring two straight batters with the bases loaded and one out. Navarro, the former Major League right-hander, hurled his third shutout of the season, allowing three runs and eight hits. He struck out nine batters and walked four.
Jay Laflair and Pete Maestrales each added two hits to the Bears ten-hit attack.
