Black Bears Prove They\'re Sweet To The Home Crowd, Win 3-1

Redemption came this afternoon as the Black Bears stole the win right back from Brockton, after the Rox came from behind last night, Berkshire edged their Massachusetts rivals by a 3-1 final at Sunday Wahconah Park.

Thanks to the Black Bears starter Dan Henderson and the Rox left-hander Scott Martin ‘s great pitching performance, both teams only scored one run over seven innings.

The Rox first scored a run in the fourth inning when Mike Torres hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Nestor Smith as the first run of the game. The Black Bears tied it up in the six inning when Shane Hopper hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Jose Mateo from third. In the eighth inning, P.J Johnston led off a walk, Allan Shrum reached on a bunt single. Then Mateo, who had 4 stolen bases in the game, hit an RBI single to right, scoring Johnston from second, giving the Black Bears 2-1 lead. Kevin Forbes reached on a fielder's choice, and on the next pitch Mateo stole third. Hopper followed with a sacrifice fly to center fielder, his second RBI of the afternoon, as Mateo scored from third to stretch the Berkshire lead to two. The Black Bears stole a season high six bases today, as the aggressive baseball style would be the difference in this ball game.

Henderson threw five innings, allowing one run on four hits. The Black Bears top reliever Eddie Aucoin (5-0) picked up the win, hurling four shutout innings, allowing only two hits over four innings and striking out two batters. Brockton starter Martin pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits, with eight strikeouts for a no decision. Rookie reliever Kevin Lynn fell to 1-1 with the loss, allowing two runs on three hits over the final two innings.
