Bluefish Sweep Surf

ATLANTIC CITY (August 31, 2003)_ The Bridgeport Bluefish swept a doubleheader from the Atlantic City Surf by respective scores of 4-1 and 2-1 before 4015 Sunday at Sandcastle Stadium. The victories upped Bridgeport's lead to four games over Long Island in the North Division of the ALPB; Atlantic City fell three games behind Camden the South Division.

Bridgeport closer Mike Guilfoyle recorded saves in both ends of the doubleheader and set an Atlantic League single-season record in the process.Guilfoyle now has 37 saves which breaks the previous record held by Matt Wagner.

In game one of the doubleheader the Bluefish scored two runs in the third inning off of RBI singles from Tony Amado and Willis Otanez to take a 2-1 lead that they would hold on to.

Bridgeport added two more runs in the sixth to take game one from Atlantic City.

Bluefish starter Kevin Henthorne pitched a solid five innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out two to pick up his third victory in a Bluefish uniform.

Surf starter Todd Etler took his first loss of the season allowing four runs, all earned on 10 hits.

Guilfoyle pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his league-leading 36th save of the season, which tied the single-season record in game one.

Oreste Marrero broke a scoreless tie in game two in the fourth inning with what proved to be a game-winning solo homerun over the right field wall to give Bridgeport a 1-0 lead.

Bridgeport starter Tim Cain shut down Surf hitters tossing a six and two-thirds innings giving up only one run on four hits while striking out two.

Caesar Devarez added an insurance run in the fifth with a solo shot of his own to put Bridgeport up 2-0.

Atlantic City cut the lead to one on an RBI double by Ben Candelaria to score Tim Garland who singled in the ninth. But Guilfoyle got Surf first baseman Jose Velasquez to ground out to second with the tying run at second base to end the inning and the game.

Surf starter Anthony Chavez took the loss giving up two runs on six hits while pitching a complete game and extending his league-leading strikeout total to 112.
