Atlanta United Falls to Toronto FC 2-1
June 25, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Atlanta United FC News Release
TORONTO -Atlanta United lost to Toronto FC 2-1 Saturday night at BMO Field. Luiz Araújo scored his fourth MLS goal of the season, equalizing a first half tally from the hosts, but Ralph Priso netted the game-winner in the 79th minute.
Atlanta was forced into a change before opening kick. Brooks Lennon was in the original starting lineup, but he was injured during warmups and had to be replaced by Aiden McFadden. A 2021 MLS SuperDraft pick, McFadden signed from ATL UTD 2 on June 17 as a U-20 Call-Up Replacement, filling the roster slot temporarily left vacant by Tyler Wolff's call-up to the U.S. Under-20 Men's Youth National Team for the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championships.
Jonathan Osorio opened the scoring for Toronto in the eighth minute. After Ayo Akinola and Luca Petrasso combined to feed Jayden Nelson on the left wing, Nelson played Osorio through a pair of Atlanta defenders, leaving him alone against Alan Franco. From about 10 yards out, Osorio deked right and blasted a shot to the near post to beat Rocco Ríos Novo.
Araújo pulled Atlanta level in the 57th minute. Franco Ibarra won a ball near midfield and immediately found Araújo ahead with space. The Brazilian winger blew by a defender to get in on goal and was able to get Quentin Westberg on his heels before deftly beating him to the far post for the equalizer.
Then in the 78th minute, Priso put Toronto ahead with a left-footed shot into the top corner. Marcelino Moreno tried to clear a ball from Michael Bradley, but his clearance went straight for Priso. He stepped into the ball with his first touch and sent a bullet past Ríos Novo.
Atlanta (5-6-4, 19 points) continues it three-game road trip Thursday, June 30 when it plays New York Red Bulls (8 p.m., Bally Sports South, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor).
