Atlanta United Draws Nashville SC in U.S. Open Cup Round of 32
April 21, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United will play Nashville SC in the Round of 32 of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, visiting GEODIS Park in Nashville, Tennessee on either May 10 or May 11. The fixture date and time is yet to be announced by U.S. Soccer. All 2022 U.S. Open Cup matches will be available on ESPN+. This year's champion will be automatically placed into 2023 Concacaf Champions League.
Nashville SC is currently playing in its third season in Major League Soccer after joining the league in the 2020 season. With the U.S. Open Cup returning this season for the first time since 2019 and Nashville automatically qualifying for the round of 32, Nashville's match against Atlanta will be the club's first-ever U.S. Open Cup match as an MLS club. As a United Soccer League (USL) club, Nashville finished in the round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup in 2018 and the third round in 2019. With a 3-2-2 record, Nashville currently sits in eighth place in the Western Conference. Atlanta and Nashville have met in six previous matches and both clubs sport an evenly matched 2-2-2 record against each other.
In its 107th edition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup - U.S. Soccer's National Championship - has crowned a champion since 1914 in every year except 2020 and 2021. The history-filled tournament is conducted on a single-game, knockout basis and open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States and the world's third-longest continuously running open soccer tournament was renamed to honor United States soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
Unlike MLS Regular Season matches, USOC matches cannot end in draws. Should the two teams be level at the conclusion of the 90-minute regulation, they will play two 15-minute sessions. In the event the score is still tied after an additional 30 minutes, the match will head to a penalty shootout to decide the winner.
