April 21, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Real Salt Lake News Release
Sandy, Utah - Real Salt Lake falls out of Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with 1-0 loss to Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC.
With games on either side of the midweek matchup, Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni rolled out a heavily rotated squad against the USL League One side, utilizing Real Monarchs players Bobby Pierre and Pierre Reedy alongside younger guys like Bode Davis and Chris Garcia. Real Salt Lake started the match as the clear aggressors, pestering Hailstorm's backline while leading in every statistical category. The Claret-and-Cobalt put up eight shots in the first half, but were unable to put any into the back of the net, resulting in a 0-0 scoreline heading into the halftime break.
Real Salt Lake continued to dominate in the second half, but Hailstorm's backline once again held strong. Despite leading the way offensively, it was Northern Colorado who was able to break the stalemate. In the 70th minute Robert Cornwall blasted a shot past David Ochoa to take the 1-0 lead. RSL looked to respond, but was unable to find the equalizer, falling out of the U.S. Open Cup in the Third Round.
UP NEXT: Real Salt Lake will remain on the road for regular season play, returning to the Western Conference to face Portland Timbers FC at Providence Park on Saturday, April 23 at 8:00 p.m. MT.
