Atlanta United Draws 2-2 at Nashville SC
May 21, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Atlanta United FC News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -Atlanta United tied 2-2 against Nashville SC Saturday night at GEODIS Park. Thiago Almada scored in the first half while Dom Dwyer came off the bench to net a late equalizer to earn Atlanta a hard-fought point on the road.
Luiz Araújo nearly scored just nine minutes into the match. Cutting in from the right wing, he received a pass in stride and dribbled to the top of the box where he released a low shot towards the bottom right corner, but he pulled it just wide of the post. The match had an entertaining pace in the early going, but it was stopped in the 19th minute due to lightning.
Following an almost three-hour delay, the match resumed just after 11 p.m. ET. Nashville grabbed an early goal after the restart in the 24th minute. Nashville intercepted a pass in the midfield and sprung a counterattack. Hany Mukhtar was played down the right wing, and he picked out C.J Sapong at the back post where he one-timed a shot into the net.
Atlanta immediately responded with an equalizer in the 26th minute. Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis was pressured inside his own box by Ronaldo Cisneros which forced an errant pass to Marcelino Moreno on the left side. Moreno quickly found a trailing Almada running into the penalty area. Almada scored with a one-time shot at the penalty spot past Willis for his third goal of the season. It was Moreno's team-leading fifth assist of the year.
Nashville regained the lead in the 31st minute. Jack Maher sent a cross from the right side to the back post where Sapong headed it back across goal for Mukhtar, who was stationed on the right side and headed the ball into the net.
Atlanta searched for the tying goal throughout the second half and eventually leveled the match in the 88th minute. Almada chipped ball over backline for Brooks Lennon down the right side, who sent the ball across the goalmouth where Dwyer tapped in the equalizer. It was Dwyer's second goal of the season.
Almada had an opportunity to net the game-winner in stoppage time when he was played in on goal down the right side, but he attempted to cut the ball back to his left which allowed a defender to recover and poke the ball away before he could get a shot off.
Atlanta (4-4-4, 16 points) returns to action Saturday, May 28 when it hosts Columbus Crew SC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (7:00 p.m., Bally Sports South, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor).
