Asheville Takes Third Straight from Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, NJ-Geoff Strickland's 3rd inning home run broke a 2-all tie and Asheville held on for a 5-4 win over Lakewood at FirstEnergy Park.

The Tourists (26-13) have now won 10 games in a row, while Lakewood (19-19) has dropped nine of their last 11, scoring just 29 runs in that stretch.

The BlueClaws got a run in the 6th and 7th to cut a 5-2 deficit to 5-4 and Quintin Berry, who was 4-5 in the game, doubled with one out in the 9th, but Jay Miller struck out looking and Adrian Cardenas grounded out to 2nd to end the ballgame.

Berry came into the day in a 5-40 slump; his four hits and two stolen bases. It's his first and the team's 4th four-hit game of the season.

Tommy Baumgardner got his 14th save for Aneury Rodriguez (8-7), who lasted 5.1 innings and gave up three runs.

Asheville jumped out on Edgar Garcia with two runs in a 37 pitch 2nd inning, as Jay Cox doubled in a run and Hector Gomez walked with the bases loaded.

Adrian Cardenas and Charlie Yarbrough had back-to- back RBI singles in the 3rd off of Aneury Rodriguez to tie the game, but Garcia allowed a solo homer to Geoff Strickland (8) in the 4th and Asheville never lost the lead.

Garcia (3-6) allowed three runs over four, and Chris Rhoades gave up single runs in the 5th and 6th, though one was on a double-steal and another when Gus Milner misplayed a fly ball by Anthony Jackson into an RBI triple.

The series concludes on Thursday night, with Lakewood throwing Darren Byrd (5-9, 4.76) against knuckleballer Simon Ferrer (6-7, 4.63) at 7:05.
