Kane County Cougars News Release
Appleton, Wisconsin - The Kane County Cougars (52-52, 17-18) were shutout for the eighth time this season in a 5-0 loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (47-57, 16-19) on Sunday afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium.
Two pitchers that were making their first career Midwest League outings exchanged zeroes through the first four innings. The Cougars could not muster a run off Wisconsin lefty Aaron Ashby. Franklyn Soriano was strong in his debut for the Cougars, as well. However, in the fifth, Soriano walked Payton Henry to lead off the inning. The next batter, Gilbert Lara, broke the scoreless tie with a two-run homer to put Wisconsin on the board, 2-0.
Two runs were good enough for Ashby (1-0), the Timber Rattlers starter who completed his outing after six innings, allowing no runs on six hits to earn his first Midwest League win. Soriano (0-1) was lifted after 4.2 innings, surrendering two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk. The new Cougar left-hander suffered the loss.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Timber Rattlers put the game out of reach. Tristen Lutz collected an RBI single. The second run of the frame scored on Juan Torres' wild pitch. Finally, Gilbert Lara sealed the game with a sacrifice fly to push the Wisconsin advantage to 5-0.
Carlos Herrera pitched two scoreless frames out of the Wisconsin bullpen, yielding just one hit. J.T. Hintzen came on to record the final three outs of the game.
Juan Torres allowed three runs (one earned) on the mound for the Cougars. He struck out five out of the seven batters he retired. Rafael Pujols worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.
The Cougars and Timber Rattlers play game three of the four-game set on Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Jayson McKinley (4-3, 3.60) takes the ball for the Cougars. Follow the action live with Joe Brand on AM 1280 WBIG or on kccougars.com.
