SATURDAY: Starter Osvaldo Hernandez tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings and shortstop Gabriel Arias reached base 4 times as the TinCaps shutout the Hot Rods, 3-0. Hernandez allowed 4 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 4. The bullpen combined to throw 3.2 innings, allowing 0 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 4 and collecting a save. Arias finished 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI.

COOPERSTOWN CONNECTIONS: The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Sunday. Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman, Chipper Jones, and Jim Thome will all be inducted. In 1996, TinCaps Coach Jhonny Carvajal played with Vladimir Guerrero with the Double-A Harrisburg Senators (Expos). That season, Guerrero slashed .360/.438/.612 in 118 games at Double-A. The Senators won the Eastern League that season. Trevor Hoffman spent 16 years with the TinCaps parent club, the San Diego Padres. With the Padres, Hoffman held a 2.76 career ERA and collected 552 of his 601 career saves.

BASEBALL RUNS IN THE FAMILY: TinCaps Hitting Coach Jonathan Mathews' son, Merrick, won the Class 2A Iowa Baseball State Finals, 4-3, with Centerville High School on Saturday. Jonathan attended Centerville High School, as did his father, Rick. Rick Mathews is currently a scout for the Colorado Rockies. Rick served as the bullpen coach for the Rockies for 6 years under Clint Hurdle, including in 2007 when the Rockies made it to the World Series against the Boston Red Sox. Jonathan also coached at the big league level in 2017 when he was the Padres Outfield Coach. Centerville is a town in Iowa of only about 5,300 people located about 20 minutes north of the Iowa-Missouri border.

HEATING UP: Gabriel Arias is on a season-best 7-game on-base streak. During this time, since July 19, the 18-year-old from Venezuela is 9-for-26 (.346) with a double, a home run, 4 RBIs, 3 walks, and 4 runs scored. Arias went 3-for-3 Saturday night with a double, a walk, and an RBI

IN CONTROL: TinCaps pitchers have walked the fewest batters in the Midwest League this season - 297 in 894.0 IP. That's only 3.0 BB/9. Fort Wayne also has the best ratio of strikeouts to walks (3.08/1).

PODO POWER: Since making his 2018 TinCaps debut on May 18, Robbie Podorsky leads the Midwest League as well as Class Low-A in batting average at .363. Thursday he had a 16-game on-base streak that began on July 2 come to a close. In the stretch, he hit .410 with a .500 OBP - both league highs.

POWER SURGE: On Wednesday, Kelvin Melean became the first TinCap with a multi-homer game since Hudson Potts hit 2 home runs at Parkview Field last Aug. 30 against Great Lakes. Prior to Wednesday, Melean had gone 170 career MiLB games, and 715 plate appearances, without a home run.

LEAGUE LEADERS: Jeisson Rosario is 3rd in runs (63), 8th in OBP (.383), and 9th in walks (51)... Esteury Ruiz is 3rd in SB (33)... Robbie Podorsky is tied for 10th in SB (21)... Osvaldo Hernandez is 1st in ERA (1.85)... Aaron Leasher is 10th in ERA (3.39)... Travis Radke is 3rd in saves (13).

ADVANCED STATS LEAGUE LEADERS: Jeisson Rosario is 9th in BB% (13%) & 9th in BB/K (0.69)... Aaron Leasher is 7th in K/9 (9.00), 4th lowest in HR/9 (0.42), 8th in K% (23%), and 5th in FIP (3.46)

ON THE SHELF: The TinCaps currently have 3 key players on the Disabled List in starting pitcher Mason Thompson (tricep strain), infielder Justin Lopez (broken left thumb), and outfielder Tirso Ornelas (right wrist).

BULLPEN BOOMERANG: TinCaps relievers have posted a 3.02 ERA over the last 84 games since April 25. In this time, the 'pen has been led by Travis Radke, Caleb Boushley, Evan Miller, and Ben Sheckler. Through the first 19 games of the year, the bullpen had allowed 60 ER in 72.1 IP for a 7.47 ERA.
