Arrieta, Norfolk Blast Charlotte 9-0
April 14, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Jake Arrieta tossed seven shutout innings and Rhyne Hughes clubbed a three-run homer to lead the Tides to a 9-0 win over Charlotte Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Park.
Arrieta was terrific in helping the Tides snap a three-game losing streak, as he allowed just three singles and two walks while striking out five. The 24-year-old needed just 79 pitches to navigate seven innings after he threw 80 pitches in five innings in his season debut.
Arrieta has now tossed 12.0 scoreless innings to start the 2010 campaign and has yielded six hits and six walks while striking out seven over that span.
The Tides gave Arrieta all the support he would need in the second inning, as Norfolk plated four runs on five hits off of Charlotte starter Carlos Torres (1-1). Robert Andino, Jeff Salazar and Scott Moore each had RBI singles in the frame, while Adam Donachie added a sacrifice fly.
The score stayed 4-0 until the seventh inning, when Hughes clubbed a long drive just inside the right field foul pole for a three-run blast. The homer was the first of the season for Hughes, who has hit safely in each of the six games he's played in this year.
Hughes, Salazar and Andino each finished with two hits apiece for the Tides, who finished up their season opening homestand at 3-4.
Norfolk will head to the road Thursday night for the start of a four-game series with the Durham Bulls. Alfredo Simon (0-0, 0.00) will take the mound for Norfolk against Bulls right-hander Jeff Bennet (0-1, 9.00), with first pitch set for 7:05.
