Resop Strikes Out 10 in Loss vs. Durham

The Durham Bulls defeated the Gwinnett Braves 3-1 on Wednesday night at Coolray Field. The G-Braves lost their fourth straight and were swept for the first time since April of 2009 (4/17-4/19). G-Braves starting pitcher Chris Resop struck out a personal- and team-high 10 batters but didn't factor into the decision. Gwinnett (2-5) falls to fourth place in the International League South while the Durham Bulls (5-2) are now alone in first place.

It Was Over When: In his second relief appearance for the G-Braves, Cristhian Martinez gave up 2 R/ER on 3 hits in the tenth inning, getting charged with the loss. In his only other appearance out of the bullpen on 4/11, he also gave up 2 runs (1 ER).

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Chris Resop began the game striking out the first 5 batters he faced. He finished with 10 strikeouts in 6.0 IP. Craig Kimbrel struck out 4 batters in 2.0 IP.

At the plate: Braves second baseman Joe Thurston hit his first home run as a G-Brave in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was his first HR in a regular season game since May 1, 2009 when he hit one against the Washington Nationals as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. His HR tied the game for the G-Braves.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Heath Phillips went 7.2 innings, giving up one R/ER on 4 hits and struck out 4. Joe Bateman was credited for the victory, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit.

At the plate: Bulls first baseman Chris Richard went 1-for-3 with an RBI double, which was the first run scored in the game (seventh inning).

On Deck: Gwinnett leaves the friendly confines of Coolray Field to begin a 12-game road trip. They travel to Fort Mill, SC to take on the Charlotte Knights in game one of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. at Knights Stadium. G-Braves RHP Todd Redmond (1-0, 1.29 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Jeff Marquez (0-1, 9.00 ERA) of the Knights.
