Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- For the second consecutive evening the Asheville Tourists spun a shutout and beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 6-0. On this occasion the primary weapon Asheville used was starting pitcher Sam Howard. The Tourists lefty breezed through seven innings, allowed only two hits, and struck out eight Intimidators. Grahamm Wiest and Jerry Vasto completed the blanking by each tossing scoreless frames behind Howard.

The Intimidators kept it close throughout as Luis Martinez pitched one of his best games of the season. Neither team had luck scoring but Asheville broke through in the sixth. With runners at first and second and one out, Dom Nunez bounced into a fielder's choice. Kannapolis attempted to turn a double-play; however, the throw to first base rolled away from Cody Daily and Forrest Wall was able to score on the play.

The game remained 1-0 until the Tourists stuck big in the eighth. Max White and Wall connected with back-to-back doubles to make it 2-0. Then with runners at second and third and two outs, Yonathan Daza beat out a ground ball up the middle plating both Wall and Shane Hoelscher. Roberto Ramos, playing in his first game since a stint on the disabled list, followed with a towering two-run Home Run to right-centerfield.

Both teams had to wait out a one hour and forty-three minute rain delay and during the action rain fell throughout. The Tourists pitching staff has not allowed a run in their last 18.1 innings; 3.2 innings shy of their season-high. It is the second time this year Asheville has put together consecutive shutout victories.

Next up is a four game series against the Rome Braves at State Mutual Stadium. Rome has lost three straight games in which they scored a total of only one run. Game one of the series is scheduled for 7:05pm on Thursday evening.
