SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds got off to a slow start on Wednesday evening, falling to the Lakewood BlueClaws by a 6-1 final score. Lakewood scored four runs in the first inning and coasted to victory, avoiding a three-game sweep to Delmarva.

The BlueClaws jumped out to an early lead against Shorebirds' starter Tanner Chleborad. The right-hander made his first start since April 10th after missing nearly four months due to injury. A single, hit by pitch and error loaded the bases with one out. Damek Tomscha belted a bases-clearing double for a 3-0 lead. Jiandido Tromp lifted a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 advantage after one inning.

Nigel Nootbaar pitched three scoreless innings in relief, after relieving Chleborad in the second inning. Tanner Scott got through two frames unscathed, but the reliever allowed the first two to reach in the seventh. Caleb Kellogg surrendered RBI singles to Kyle Martin and Cord Sandberg to score the inherited runners.

The Shorebirds' only offense came in the sixth inning. Cam Kneeland drew a walk off BlueClaws' starter Elniery Garcia. Jomar Reyes ripped an RBI double, his second two-bagger of the game. Reyes surpassed Kneeland for the team lead with 24 doubles on the season.

Garcia collected the win for Lakewood, giving up just one run on five hits in six innings. Joey DeNato picked up a nine-out save for the BlueClaws, while Chleborad took the loss for Delmarva in his one-inning start.

Delmarva returns home for a four-game series against the Greenville Drive, their first matchup with the Boston Red Sox affiliate. The Shorebirds have yet to announce a probable start for the series opener on Thursday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.
