Power Slips to Lakewood 6-4

(Charleston, W.V. - August 20, 2015) - The West Virginia Power lost to the Lakewood BlueClaws 6-4 on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power tallied five hits in the game, matching their lowest hit total in any single game this month.

Lakewood struck for a pair of runs off Power starter Stephen Tarpley in the first inning. Herlis Rodriguez, Scott Kingery, and Damek Tomscha each had doubles in the frame to give the BlueClaws a 2-0 lead.

West Virginia responded with a run in the second inning. After being struck by a pitch in the helmet, Pablo Reyes stole second and scored on an RBI double to right from Elvis Escobar.

Reyes and Escobar contributed to the next three runs for West Virginia. After a leadoff single by Connor Joe and a five-pitch walk from Michael Suchy, Reyes drove both home with a double to left-center. A few pitches later, Escobar hit his second double of the day to give the Power a 4-2 lead over Lakewood.

Lakewood responded with a run in the fifth off Tarpley to make it 4-3 and then scored three in the sixth to take a 6-4 advantage. With two on and one-out, Deivi Grullon clubbed his fifth home run of the season to give Lakewood its first lead since the fourth.

Tarpley (10-3) took the loss after matching a season-high of ten hits allowed. Manaure Martinez (3-1) received the victory with three shutout innings in relief. Matt Hockenberry earned his 14th save of the season by recording the final four outs including a bases-loaded strikeout to end the Power eighth.

West Virginia (36-17, 73-49) continues the series with Lakewood (30-23, 63-58) on Friday night. RHP Yeudy Garcia (12-5, 2.26) will take the hill for the Power and will be opposed by BlueClaws RHP Will Morris (5-0, 1.74). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. while pregame on Charleston's ESPN Radio 104.5 FM and 1490, the Power website, and the TuneIn Radio App is slated for 6:45 p.m.

Friday's game features a team photo giveaway to the first 1,000 fans present by Roy Kuhl Sports. It is also Faith & Family night at Appalachian Power Park with a pregame concert from Bible Center Church's Praise Band from 6-6:30 p.m. The game will also feature a mystery ball sale where fans can purchase an autographed baseball for $10 with autographs ranging from Major Leaguers to celebrities and all proceeds benefit Power Baseball Charities. Friday's game is also the final Friday Night Fireworks of the regular season.
