New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - For the second time in as many nights, Ryan Schimpf hit a long home run against the Erie SeaWolves, but it went for naught as the Fisher Cats dropped a 5-3 decision at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The loss leaves New Hampshire in need of a victory to avoid a sweep to Erie in the finale on Sunday afternoon.
The SeaWolves (48-70) opened the scoring in the first inning against starting pitcher Scott Barnes (L; 2-4). Lead-off hitter Wynton Bernard doubled, then scored on a single by Jason Krizan for a quick 1-0 lead.
A three-run frame padded Erie's lead in the third. The frame began with a lead-off single before Bernard reached on a bunt single with one out. On the play, Barnes collided with second baseman Christian Lopes, hurting his left hand in the process. While the southpaw stayed in the game, the collision clearly affected him.
With two on and one out, he walked Krizan to load the bases, leading to a sac fly by JaCoby Jones. Barnes then hit Dean Green to load the bases before surrendering a two-run single to Dominic Ficociello to push Erie's lead to 4-0.
The SeaWolves added one more in the fifth against Luis Perez before the Fisher Cats (58-58) put the clamps on. Perez allowed just the solo run over four-plus innings, striking out two over his longest outing of the year. Danny Barnes and Chad Girodo added scoreless innings before the night was out.
New Hampshire made a game of it in the sixth when Schimpf struck again. With two outs and a man at first, Kevin Nolan reached on a throwing error, putting two men aboard. That's all Schimpf needed. With the rain falling, he blasted his 15th home run off the base of the video board to cut the deficit to 5-3.
That was as close as New Hampshire would get. They stranded two in the seventh, left on the lead-off hitter in the eighth, and then hit into a double play with two men aboard to end the game.
The series and the homestand come to an end on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. The first 1,000 kids receive a throwback Fisher Cats jersey thanks to Coca-Cola. After the game all kids can run the bases thanks to the Buyers Beware Program.
Fans can enjoy a pre-game sing-along with Lil' Iguana's Children's Safety Foundation in left field before the game. Fans can also view and take pictures with a helicopter in center field courtesy of Seacoast Helicopters. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling (603) 641-2005, or by visiting the team box office at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
The Fisher Cats will send righty Austin Bibens-Dirkx to the hill against Erie's Michael Fulmer on Sunday afternoon. Bob Lipman and Ben Gellman have the radio call beginning at 1:15 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
