Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio - Andrew Davis delivered his second walk off hit of the current home stand at All Pro Freight Stadium on Monday night, as his bases loaded single scored J.C. Figueroa in the bottom of the ninth to give the Crushers a 2-1 victory.

The victory for the Crushers (36-30) prevented a sweep, and marked both their third walk off of the current home stand, and their fourth of the season. The loss for Washington (26-39) was their sixth in nine games against the Crushers this season.

Pitching dominated the entire contest, and defensively, the game was highlighted by a triple play in the third inning.

The Crushers plated the first run of the game, in the bottom of the first inning. Adrian Ortiz smashed a double down the left field line to start the inning, and advanced to second base on a wild pitch before scoring on Figueroa's groundout.

The Wild Things tied the game in the top of the third inning, but had the chance to do so much more. Andrew Heck reached on Wally Correa's fielding error at short to start the inning, and came home on AJ Nunziato's RBI single.

Washington cleanup batter Mark Samuelson followed Nunziato's base hit with a walk, loading the bases for Jovan Rosa, with nobody out. Rosa then hit into a 5-4-3 triple play, squandering a golden opportunity for the Wild Things.

The game was delayed 16 minutes in the bottom of the sixth inning, because a light pole on the third base side of the ballpark went out.

Both offenses were relatively silent after the power outage, until the Crushers rallied in the ninth. Figueroa started the rally with a one out base hit, and made his way to third on Jason Taylor's single to center. Taylor advanced to second on the base hit, which prompted the Wild Things to intentionally walk Russ Moldenhauer.

With the bases loaded, Washington manager Chris Bando called on Steven Grife, a product of Brookside High School, who dueled with Davis into a 2-2 count, before Davis delivered the game winning single to right center field.

Jonathan Kountis (3-2) tossed a pair of scoreless innings and allowed just a base hit to score the victory. The combination of Kountis, Ben Klapfczynski and Trevor Longfellow combined to toss four scoreless innings of one hit relief. Josh Hungerman started the game for the Crushers, and fanned eight batters, while allowing just an unearned run on five hits through five innings. Nick Cicio (0-4) took the loss.

While the Crushers tallied just six hits on the night, seven out of the starting nine reached safely on the evening, while Taylor paced the Crushers, with a 2-for-4 performance.

The Crushers will begin a three game series with the Rockford Riverhawks at All Pro Freight Stadium on Tuesday night. Right hander Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (5-6, 4.96) will start for the Crushers, and the Riverhawks will counter with right hander Drew Rucinski (5-1, 2.97). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
