Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (27-38) vs. WINDY CITY THUNDERBOLTS (37-27)

Monday, July 30- - 7:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #66 - Home Game #36 (27-38), (13-22)

RHP #30 Jacob Sanchez (3-1, 2.03 ERA) vs. RHP #8 Dustin Williams (8-4, 4.83 ERA)

Last time out.

After a victory in the series opener, the Slammers were shut out 3-0 by Mike Recchia and the Windy City ThunderBolts at Silver Cross Field on Sunday afternoon. Both Recchia and Steven Maxwell, Joliet's starter, threw shutouts through the first six innings. In the seventh, with runners on the corners, the Bolts finally got a run across on a successful double-steal to take a 1-0 lead. Windy City notched another pair of runs in the eighth off a two-RBI single by C.J. Gillman for the 3-0 final. For the third time in five days, a Slammers pitcher threw a stellar game but was stuck with the loss due to lack of run support. Steven Maxwell threw seven innings on just two runs, didn't walk a single hitter, and fanned four. Geoff Brown, Daniel Carela, and Chase Doremus finished off Sunday's match on the hill.

With the loss, the Slammers dropped the season series with Windy City for the second straight year.

For Starters.

Jacob Sanchez is coming off a hard luck loss at the hands of the Schaumburg Boomers. He went seven innings on July 25, giving up one run on six hits in a 1-0 loss. He struck out a career high eight in the outing. Sanchez beat Windy City the previous time he faced them on July 20 as he went seven innings and only gave up two runs in a 4-2 victory. The right-hander has gone at least six innings in all four outings this season. Sanchez was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012. Sanchez finished the 2012 Iowa Wesleyan season with a 10-2 record and a 2.42 earned run average, including 111 strikeouts, 12 walks, 71 hits allowed and 28 runs allowed (25 earned) in 93 innings pitched. He led the MCC in strikeouts and innings pitched, was second in wins and third in earned run average and opponents' batting average (.208). Sanchez obliterated the Iowa Wesleyan single season strikeout record, becoming the first player in school history to go over 100 K's in a season, and also tied the school record for wins in a season. He also was a recipient of a Gold Glove award with one error in 29 chances in the field.

Going for the series win in the rubber match.

Joliet is looking for their first series win against Windy City this season and their first home series win ever against the ThunderBolts. Joliet has a series record of 4-7 at home this season and they are 5-6 overall in rubber matches.

Trying to avoid a new season low.

The Slammers are 11 games under .500. They have never been 12 games under the .500 mark.

Home woes.

The Slammers are 13-22 at home this season, worst in the Frontier League.

The bullpen is back.

After a rough June (5.74 ERA), Joliet's bullpen has bounced back nicely in July, posting a 2.87 ERA.

Abel is able.

Abel Nieves leads the Slammers in all three Triple Crown categories with a.362 batting average, six home runs and 35 RBI. David Christensen has nine home runs on the season but all nine came with the now defunct London Rippers.

Workhorse.

Geoff Brown leads the Slammers in appearances as he's pitched in 31 games this season. The rookie out of the University of Washington has a 3.48 ERA in 31 innings.

Save me.

Last season Joliet native Ryan Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season record with 28 saves. Quigley is now in the Padres organization but former Angels farmhand Amalio Diaz has picked up right where Quigley left off. Diaz is second in the league with 16 saves in 17 attempts.

Error indicator.

The Slammers are 9-28 in games when they make an error. They are 18-10 in games when they do not.
