Amerks Come up Empty-Handed in Albany

February 13, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release

(Albany, NY) - Rookie goaltender Ken Appleby turned aside all 26 shots he faced for his first AHL shutout as he and the Albany Devils capped a two-game sweep over the Rochester Americans with a 3-0 win Saturday at Times Union Center. The Amerks have now been shutout in back-to-back games for the second time this season and fall to 23-23-2-1 on the year with one more matchup on tap for the weekend.

Chad Ruhwedel led the team in shots for the second straight night while Nathan Lieuwen, who was making his first start since a 23-save shutout last Saturday in Binghamton, made 23 saves in the losing effort.

Graham Black, Mike Sislo and Jim O'Brien each scored for the Devils while Appleby became the third different Albany netminder to earn a shutout against the Amerks this season.

Goals were hard to come by in last night's get-together in Rochester, but that wasn't the case tonight in Albany as the Devils scored twice in the first 8:37 to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Black provided the early advantage for the hosts just 2:20 into the contest when he put home a Reece Scarlett rebound from the right of the crease before Sislo, the lone goal-scorer in last night's meeting, connected on a one-timer for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season.

Sislo nearly had his second of the night with less than a minute to play in the opening frame off a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush, but his one-timer couldn't see past the left post and the Devils carried the two-goal advantage into the break.

After missing on a penalty shot late in the second period, O'Brien atoned for it with 34 seconds to spare in regulation when he lifted a Paul Thompson centering feed over Lieuwen, giving Albany the 3-0 win.

The Amerks bring the weekend to a close on Sunday, Feb. 14 with an afternoon matchup in Hartford against the Wolf Pack at the XL Center. The 3:00 p.m. matinee will be the fourth and final meeting between the two teams this season - and just the 14th all-time - and will be carried live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester. The Amerks have won two of the first three games against Hartford and have outscored the Wolf Pack 10-4 in the season series despite being shutout in the previous get-together back on Dec. 27 in Rochester.
