Portland Pirates News Release
Wilkes-Barre, PA - Defenseman Mike Matheson netted the game winning goal 1:29 in overtime to lift the Portland Pirates (28-18-1-0) past the Atlantic Division leaders, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (32-14-2-1) by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena. The victory was Portland's first in Wilkes-Barre since December 8, 2012.
After playing scoreless through 40 minutes, Pirates forward Rob Flick finally broke the deadlock at 3:08 of the third period when he stole an outlet pass from former Pirate Derek Army along the right wing boards in the attacking zone. He moved into the slot and fired off a wrist shot that beat Tristan Jarry low to the glove side. Flick's sixth goal of the year was unassisted.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton evened the score at 11:01 of the third when Dominik Simon scored on a spin-around shot from the right circle through traffic, beating Sam Brittain to the stick side. Kael Mouillierat and Will O'Neill assisted on Simon's 13th goal of the campaign.
The Penguins would have a chance to win in regulation after Matheson hauled down Carter Rowney to prevent a scoring chance on the breakaway in the final minute. But, Brittain denied Rowney's penalty shot with a blocker save on the backhanded attempt with 59.5 seconds left.
At one point from the mid-way point of the first period to the mid-way point of the second period, the Pirates racked up 22 consecutive shots on goal without the Penguins registering a single shot on net.
Matheson's overtime game winner came on a breakaway as he snapped a wrister to the blocker side on Jarry with assists from Kyle Rau and Rocco Grimaldi.
Brittain stopped 23 shots to improve to 6-8-0 on the season. Jarry stopped 34, but takes the overtime loss, moving his record to 11-3-2 for the year.
The Pirates and Penguins lock horns again for the series finale tomorrow afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena, with faceoff for the Valentine's Day matinee at 4:05 p.m. Jeff Mannix calls all the action starting at 3:45 with the Pirates Pregame Show, served by Dunkin Donuts, on the WPEI Portland Pirates Radio Network, Presented by Napa Auto Parts, on 95.9/95.5 FM.
