Americans Take Down T-Birds

The Tri-City Americans defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-3 Wednesday night at Toyota Center in Kennewick.

The loss snapped the T-Birds four-game winning streak. They are back in action on Friday at ShoWare Center against the Kamloops Blazers at 7:35 p.m. They face the Everett Silvertips on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at ShoWare Center.

Tri-City (17-5-0-0) took a 1-0 lead at 4:05 of the first period on a goal by Neal Prokop. Jordan Messier had the only assist.

The Americans went in front 2-0 with a power-play goal by Justin Feser at 6:58 of the first. Brett Plouffe and Brooks Macek had the assists on the goal.

Tyler Schmitt scored a power-play goal at 8:41 of the first to extend the Americans lead to 3-0. Johnny Lazo and Kruise Reddick assisted on the goal.

Lazo put Tri-City in front 4-0 at 12:25 of the first when he scored. Brendan Shinnimin and Adam Hughesman had the assists on the goal.

Seattle (8-13-1-3) got on the board at 17:35 of the first on Prab Rai's 12th goal of the year. Lindsay Nielsen and Charles Wells assisted on the power-play goal. Wells and Nielsen both extended their point streaks with the assists. Wells has a five-game streak and Nielsen has a three-game streak.

Tri-City got the four-goal lead back at 19:02 of the first when Macek scored. Reddick and Jarrett Toll assisted on the goal.

Tri-City outshot Seattle 16-14 in the first period.

Jeremy Schappert got the T-Birds second goal of the game at 1:56 of the second period. The puck came around the boards in the Tri-City end and was heading to the left point. Schappert skated to the puck and one-timed the loose puck. Schappert's shot beat Americans goalie Drew Owsley over the glove for his fifth goal of the year. With the goal Schappert extended his point streak to six games.

The T-Birds kept fighting and Jonathan Parker scored at 13:23 of the second to cut the deficit to two goals. Luke Lockhart assisted on Parker's 12th goal of the year.

The Americans led 26-23 in total shots after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 10-9 in the second period.

The T-Birds pulled goalie Calvin Pickard with two minutes left in the game to try and tie the game. They had several scoring chances but were denied by Owsley.

Tri-City outshot Seattle 32-29 in the game.

Pickard made 27 saves on 32 shots and his record is now 7-9-1-3.

Owsley stopped 26 of 29 shots and his record is now 16-4-0-0.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2009-10 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
