Tulsa Oilers News Release
TULSA, OK - In the conclusion of a 17-game, regular season series, the Allen Americans skated away with the last laugh in a one-sided 5-1 victory over the Tulsa Oilers on Tuesday night at the BOK Center. Chad Costello, the ECHL's leading scorer, recorded a pair of goals and chipped in an assist to lead the Americans to their fourth straight win over the Oilers. Tulsa finished with just five wins (5-10-2) in the series with Allen and was outscored 19-6 over the last four contests.
Costello, who put home the overtime game-winning goal on Saturday against Tulsa, opened the scoring on Tuesday with a heavy blast from the right wing. As an Oilers' power play came to an end, Costello found himself with an open lane towards Tulsa goalie Brandon Anderson and opted for a slap shot to notch his 38th goal of the season at the 11:54 mark of the opening frame.
At 6:09 of the middle frame, the Oilers knotted the contest at 1-1 thanks to a power play deflection by Jon Booras. Defenseman Dave Pszenyczny swatted the puck toward the Allen net and Booras re-directed the shot through Joel Rumpel for his second goal in as many games and his 24th of the season. The tie score lasted less than five minutes as the Americans answered right back with a tally from Vincent Arseneau at 10:26. A holding call against Nathan Lutz followed ten seconds later by a roughing infraction on Kevin Noble, put the Oilers down two skaters and the Americans cashed in on the 5-on-3 opportunity. Costello zipped a pass across the top of the Tulsa crease and Jamie Schaafsma snapped the puck over a sprawling Anderson for a 3-1 Allen lead at 12:41. In the closing seconds of the period, Costello earned his third point of the night with a brilliant individual effort. The right-winger darted off the boards and into the middle of the Oilers zone before slipping a shot under the pad of Anderson with just six seconds on the clock. Allen carried a 4-1 edge into the second intermission.
Patrik Valcak notched the Americans' fourth unanswered goal at 7:58 of the final stanza. Anderson attempted to bank the puck off the back boards but his clearing attempt went right to the stick of Valcak who flung a shot off Anderson and into the net. The Oilers mustered only four shots in the third period and finished the night with a total of just 22 shots on goal.
Rumpel earned the win in his first professional start while Anderson suffered his ninth loss of the season with 24 saves on 29 shots. Tulsa snapped out of a three-game power play drought but still failed to score more than two goals in any of the final four games against the Americans. The Oilers, who earned only two victories in eight games against the Americans at the BOK Center this season, missed an opportunity to move into a tie with Quad City for third place in the Central Division but remain five points up on Wichita with five games remaining.
The Oilers return to home ice on Friday at 7:35 p.m. to take on the Missouri Mavericks.
