Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX - The crew of the popular television show ‘Trading Spaces' could have filmed their latest episode in Rio Rancho over the weekend.

After giving up six third period goals in an 8-2 loss to New Mexico Friday night, the Gorillas turned the tables on the Scorpions, scoring five goals in the first period Saturday and going on to win, 6-3.

New Mexico got on the board first with a Neil Trimm marker to begin the scoring-Nate Hagemo answered for Amarillo just 41 seconds later to tie the game at one. Mitch Stephens put the Scorpions back on top with a marker of his own at 9:19 of the first.

Joe Guenther and the Gorillas power play took over from there. Guenther poked home a power play tally past Scorpions starting netminder Jason Wolfe to tie the game at two. Just moments later, Guenther scored again on a rebound opportunity in front, following a Stuart Macrae shot to give the Gorillas a 3-2 lead. Mike Handza extended the Amarillo advantage with his first goal as a Gorilla less than two minutes later, while Guenther finished off the first period scoring (and his hat trick) with just three seconds to go in the period, popping a shot behind Wolfe.

The Scorpions struck quickly in the second, scoring after a bouncing puck went of the shin of Neil Trimm and into the back of the net. Amarillo starting goaltender Mike Gorman was shaken up after the play, and was taken out of the game just 22 seconds into the middle frame. Backup netminder Ryan Scott came in, stonewalling the Scorpions for the remainder of the game. The New York native stopped all 30 shots he faced through the final two period to secure the victory for the Gorillas.

Scott nearly capped off his perfect evening with a goal late in the third-with the Scorpions' net empty, Scott shot the puck down the ice towards the New Mexico goalmouth. On the choppy ice, however, the puck slowed down just before reaching the net and was put in by Amarillo's Jake Morissette to solidify the 6-3 Gorillas victory.

The Gorillas will be in action next against the Odessa Jackalopes on Tuesday, December 9, at the Ector County Coliseum. Fans are encouraged to watch the game at the "Home Away From Home" watching party, hosted by the Country Barn restaurant in Amarillo. For more information, please call (806) 242-PUCK (7825).
