[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-Joe Guenther scored three first period goals, leading Amarillo to a 6-3 victory over the Scorpions. Ryan Scott played well in net making 31 saves after entering the game early in the second period.
Things looked good early for the Scorpions as Neil Trimm picked up his own rebound and deposited it into the net. Nate Hegemo tied the game 41 seconds later for Amarillo.
Mitch Stephens reclaimed the lead for the Scorps with his ninth goal of the season. To the power play went Amarillo and Guenther lit the lamp for the 11th time this season. As the goal was scored the Scorpions were assessed another penalty and Guenther found the net for the second time in the game.
Michael Handza found room in the slot and scored his first goal of the season making it 4-2. Guenther finished his natural hat trick by scoring with just three seconds left on the first period clock.
Andrew Martin led the Scorpions out for the second period in relief of Jason Wolfe. New Mexico crept closer as Trimm scored his second goal of the game 22 seconds into the middle period. Amarillo goalie Mike Gorman was injured on the play and was forced to leave the game.
Defense took over the final parts of the contest. Jake Morissette added an empty net goal to seal the victory for Amarillo.
