Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
WICHITA, KS - Brett Smith scored a goal and added an assist as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs got a pair of powerplay goals to defeat the Wichita Thunder 2-1 on Saturday night at the Kansas Coliseum. Tyrel Lucas' third period goal turned out to be the game-winner as Wichita scored late to cut the lead to one.
Ryan Mior made 17 saves to earn his fifth win of the season as the Mudbugs had to hold off a late Thunder rally with a 6 on 4 advantage to end the game. The win was Bossier-Shreveport's 12th of the year, moving them to 12-6-2 this season.
The Mudbugs led 1-0 after a chippy first period in which both teams committed numerous penalties. On Bossier-Shreveport's third powerplay of the game, Brett Smith fired home a rebound chance in front for his eighth goal of the season to give the Bugs the lead.
Tim Boron made a few great saves in the second period to keep the game 1-0 despite a 23-10 Mudbugs shot advantage after two periods. The Mudbugs won the physical battle as well, with Brett Angel looking impressive in a fight with Wichita's Curtiss Patrick. Still, the score remained 1-0 after the second.
The Mudbugs pushed hard early in the third, but couldn't build on the lead as the game stayed 1-0 until Lucas' goal. Smith got the puck from Chris Brassard and centered a great pass to Lucas, who one-timed it past Boron to snap a six-game goal scoring drought. Wichita wasn't done though, as Scott Rozendal's point blast was deflected past Mior and in to cut the lead in half and break up the shutout with just over three minutes left. A late penalty gave the Thunder a 6 on 4 with the goaltender pulled, but the Mudbugs held on for the victory in the return to Wichita for Travis Clayton, Joe Blaznek and Jon Horrell.
Boron was superb in defeat for the Thunder, stopping 34 shots on the night. The Mudbugs dominated the shots to finish with a 36-18 advantage. The Bugs converted 2 of 7 powerplay chances while Wichita was 1 for 5.
The Mudbugs will now have five days off before their first-ever meetings with the Rapid City Rush next weekend in South Dakota. The Mudbugs will take on the Rush on both Friday and Saturday night next weekend at the brand new Rushmore Plaza Events Center.
