Almonte Exits Early as Isotopes Drop 2018 Opener

April 6, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

The Isotopes 2018 campaign got off to a rough start on Thursday night, as they fell to the Salt Lake Bees, 9-3. With the loss, Albuquerque's Opening Day record drops to 11-5 all-time and the club has now fallen in three of four Openers since being affiliated with the Rockies.

Things took a turn for the worse in just the first inning for Albuquerque as starting pitcher Yency Almonte exited the game after just 16 pitches with an injury. The right-hander was taken out of the game after catcher Tom Murphy signaled for Isotopes trainer Heath Townsend. MLB.com currently ranks the 23-year-old Almonte as the Rockies number 10 prospect.

Due to Almonte's early exit, the Isotopes turned to six relievers. Among those who entered the game was Rockies reliever Carlos Estevez who began a rehab assignment with the Isotopes. Estevez recorded a perfect inning.

The Isotopes offense was able to connect on three home runs during the contest. Noel Cuevas, Raimel Tapia and Tom Murphy each registered a solo home run. Murphy led the Albuquerque bats with three hits on the evening.

Albuquerque and Salt Lake continue their five-game opening series on Friday from Smith's Ballpark. Right-hander Matt Flemer will toe the rubber for Albuquerque while the Bees turn to fellow righty Nick Tropeano. First pitch from Salt Lake is set for 6:35 p.m.
