Sounds Silence Baby Cakes in Season Opener

April 6, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Mark Canha and Franklin Barreto each homered to lead a 16-hit attack for the Nashville Sounds, who got a five-hitter from starter James Naile and three relievers in blanking the New Orleans Baby Cakes, 11-0 on Opening Night.

It was the worst Opening Night defeat in franchise history, and the first time New Orleans had been shut out in a season opener.

Canha, who hit 20 home runs for New Orleans in 2014, took 'Cakes starter Adam Conley deep for a solo shot in the second inning to break the ice. Barreto added a two-run blast an inning later, and the Sounds broke the game open with a five-run fourth highlighted by Jorge Mateo's single to plate a pair of runs.

Dustin Fowler added three hits and drove in two runs, as all nine hitters in the Nashville lineup collected a hit. Each of the first six batters had at least two hits.

The Baby Cakes, meanwhile, were held out of the hit column until Scott Van Slyke's leadoff single in the fourth, and was quickly erased when Cristhian Adames hit into a double play.

Naile (1-0) gave up three hits in five innings with five strikeouts to pick up the victory, and Metairie's Jeremy Beich chipped in two shutout frames.

Conley (0-1) was unable to record an out in the fourth and was charged with seven runs on seven hits. The left-hander walked three and struck out two.

The Baby Cakes look to bounce back in the second game of the series on Friday at 7 p.m. Zac Gallen will make his New Orleans and Marlins organizational debut, opposing Nashville's Frankie Montas. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a magnet schedule, with fireworks following the game.
