Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA - Omaha Royals outfielder Chad Allen and catcher Paul Phillips will both be at the disposal of Omaha manager Mike Jirschele, when he skippers the Pacific Coast League All-Star team at the Triple-A All-Star Game. The PCL All-Stars will battle the International League All-Stars in the 19th annual event on Wednesday, July 12th at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio.

Allen received enough votes on ballots submitted by members of the media, Triple-A field managers and general managers and online fan voting to be selected as the PCL's starting designated hitter. Nearly 900,000 votes were cast by fans for this year's Triple-A All-Stars. In 61 games with Omaha, Allen is hitting .333 with 16 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 46 RBI. His .333 average is tied for 5th-best in the league.

Phillips was selected as the PCL squad's backup catcher, behind Mike Rivera of Nashville, who was one of a league-leading four Sounds players to make the team. Phillips is hitting .258 with eight homers and 31 RBI in 62 games for Omaha and has provided solid defensive skills behind the plate.

Jirschele was named as the PCL All-Star team's manager on May 4th, becoming only the second Omaha skipper to manage in the Triple-A mid-summer classic. The Royals' Sal Rende piloted the American League squad in the 1991 contest in Louisville, Kentucky.

Also named to the 2006 PCL All-Star team is Colorado Springs closer Nate Field, who pitched for Omaha and Kansas City in 2002-2003 and 2005 (and exclusively for the parent Royals in 2004). Field is tied for 2nd in the PCL this season with 13 saves. University of Nebraska alum Adam Shabala, now an outfielder for the Fresno Grizzlies who's carrying a .292 batting average, was also selected to the team.

Toledo manager Larry Parrish will have four of his own MudHens on the International League All-Star roster, including right-hander Chad Durbin. The former Omaha hurler (2000-2002) is 7-4 with a 3.09 ERA and 80 strikeouts for Toledo. Other former Royals on the I.L. roster announced yesterday include Charlotte outfielder Ernie Young (1998), who will be making his third Triple-A All-Star appearance, Richmond catcher Carlos Mendez (1998-1999) and Ron Johnson. Johnson, who managed Omaha in 1998 and 1999 and is now manager of the Pawtucket Red Sox, will serve as a coach on IL's club.

From 1988 through 1997, the Triple-A All-Star Game pitted American League affiliates against National League affiliates. Since 1998, the PCL has taken on the IL in the Triple-A mid-summer classic, with the PCL going 5-3.

The 2006 Triple-A All-Star Game will be televised live on ESPN2 and can be heard on the Royals local station, Magic 1490. First pitch on July 12th is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Central. For more information, contact Kevin McNabb, Director of Media Relations at (402) 738-5103.
