Portland - The Portland Beavers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 3-3 deadlock and beat the Sidewinders 5-3 on Thursday night at PGE Park in Portland. The loss drops Tucson to 50-31 on the season.

Mike Schultz issued back to back walks to open the eighth before giving up a single to Jon Knott that put the Beavers on top 4-3. After another walk to Jack Cust, Schultz was lifted in favor of Mike Koplove who induced a double play ground ball from David Matranga that scored another run and made it 5-3. Koplove struck out Bobby Hill to end the inning.

Schultz (2-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs on just one hit in an inning of work. He walked three and struck out one.

Tucson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Chris Carter's RBI single in the top of the first gave the Sidewinders a 1-0 lead and Brian Barden's RBI single in the top of the fourth made it 2-0.

The Beavers cut the lead in half with a Bobby Hill RBI double in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two out, two run home run from David Matranga off Sidewinders starter Adam Bass.

Bass gave up three runs on five hits in his six innings of work. He struck out five and walked one.

Jack Cassel started for Portland and tossed seven strong innings. He gave up three runs on five hits but lost his chance for a win when Robby Hammock homered to open the top of the seventh inning.
