Allen Americans News Release
ALLEN, Texas - The Allen Americans beat the Tulsa Oilers 5-3 at the Allen Event Center to advance their record to 16-5-1 (33 points), just one point behind the league leader, Odessa. The season series is now tied 1-1 with each team winning at home.
Defenseman Chris Kaufman opened the game's scoring with a slap shot after a faceoff win by center Christian Gaudet at 4:48. Tulsa responded just over three minutes later with a goal from Marty Standish to tie the game at one. The Americans scored two more before the period was over and never allowed the Oilers to catch up after that.
At 17:05 Justin Bowers sent a beautiful pass from behind the net to Bruce Graham in the slot. Graham fired the puck past Tulsa goalie Kevin Armstrong and gave the Americans a 2-1 lead. To end the period on a higher note, Jordie Benn got his first goal since returning to the lineup Wednesday with 27 seconds remaining in the period to put the score at 3-1.
Goaltender Marty Magers started the second period in net for the Oilers, but the change in personnel didn't stop the Americans. Allen had two goals in the period, one from Graham at 2:22 and one from Justin Bowers at 13:37. Nino Musitelli assisted both goals and extended his point streak to 16 games, which is the longest point streak in the CHL this season. Tulsa's Rob Hisey did sneak one past Chris Whitley before the period was over at 17:46 to make the score 5-2.
Armstrong was back in net for the Oilers to begin the third and stopped all shots he faced. Hisey scored again for Tulsa at 12:45, but the club could not overcome the Americans' good play.
Whitley's 29-save victory tonight gave him the most wins of any goaltender in the CHL with 12.
Prior to tonight's game, the Americans signed forward Colton Yellow Horn. Yellow Horn played a combined 39 games for the Elmira Jackals and Stockton Thunder of the ECHL over the last two seasons. Allen also placed Mick Berge on 14-day IR.
Earlier today, the Central Hockey League announced suspensions for those involved in the pregame fight at the Americans-Brahmas game Wednesday. Americans Britt Dougherty and Brandon Straub received two-game and five-game suspensions, respectively, while the Brahmas' Luke Sellars and James Hiebert received two-game and three-game suspensions, respectively. Prior to Wednesday's contest, Heiebert received a two-game suspension after his hit on Americans' goalie Charlie Effinger Nov. 28 that put Effinger on goaltender IR.
Up next for the Americans is a home game against Laredo at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night at the Allen Event Center. It is Dallas Junior Hockey Association Night. Friday, Dec. 18, the Americans host Odessa at 7:30 p.m. There is a post-game skate with Santa and the team in addition to the first Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are asked to bring new teddy bears or stuffed animals to throw on the ice after the first Americans' goal. The stuffed animals will then be donated to charity. Also, the first 500 youth in attendance at Friday's game will receive a free Americans' T-shirt provided by Medical City Children's Hospital.
