Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs and Texas Brahmas needed overtime to decide a winner Friday night in a showcase of the Central Hockey League's past two Ray Miron President's Cup Champions.
The defending champion Brahmas built a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play Friday on the strength of strong special teams play but Arizona battled back with goals in the second and third periods before eventually falling in overtime, 3-2.
Kevin McLeod netted the game winner just 19 seconds into the extra session for his second point of the night, gloving down a puck before slipping it past J.F. Perras.
Jordan Cameron collected three points in the win with a goal and two assists.
Texas converted once on the power-play, held Arizona scoreless on two man-advantage opportunities and tallied its league-leading eighth shorthanded marker of the year in the first period to open a two-goal lead.
Cameron picked up the first of three points just four seconds into the Brahmas' first man-advantage chance of the game before assisting on Tyler Skworchinski's shorthanded effort with 8:15 to play in the first period.
Off an offensive zone faceoff to start the power-play, Cameron blasted a shot past J.F. Perras for his fifth of the season 7:52 into the contest.
Down a skater after a Matt Burto holding penalty midway through the period, Cameron gained possession in the offensive zone before circling and finding Skworchinski for his ninth tally of the year to give his club a 2-0 lead.
Konrad Reeder collected Arizona's best scoring chance with 2:09 to play in the period, splitting the Texas defense and lifting a backhand shot towards the net that goaltender Brett Jaeger steered aside.
Linemates Torren Delforte and Joey Sides kicked off the comeback bid early in the middle period to pull Arizona back to within one heading into the final frame with an even-strength marker just 1:29 into the second.
Collapsing on a loose puck in the slot, Delforte faked a slap shot forcing Jaeger to the ice before sending a shot on net towards the committed goaltender.
Stationed at the near post, the rookie Sides slammed home the rebound chance for his third of the year making it 2-1 in favor of Texas.
With Arizona on its sixth power-play of the game, Reeder knotted the game at two apiece with his eighth of the season just under seven minutes into the third, redirecting a Jon Landry shot from the point past Jaeger, eventually sending the game into overtime.
The Sundogs outshot the Brahmas in each of the three periods in regulation for a 37-28 final mark. Perras turned aside 25 shots in the overtime loss while Jaeger earned the win with 35 saves.
Earning a point in the overtime loss, Arizona (6-12-3) has collected points in two straight contests as it continues a season-long six-game road trip. Next up for the Sundogs are the Amarillo Gorillas tomorrow night at 6:05pm (Arizona time).
