RAPID CITY, SD- The Wichita Thunder lost 5-3 to the Rapid City Rush at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center on Saturday night. The Thunder took the early advantage when Kyle Bruce scored at 8:52 in the first period. Bruce deflected Chris McAllister's blue line shot into traffic. Rapid City tied the game at 13:!8 in the first on Luke Erickson's power play goal. Scott Wray slipped a pass into the slot from the corner that Erickson wristed past Thunder goaltender Scott Campbell.
The Rush took advantage of a pair of two-man advantages to build a 3-1 lead in the second period. Jamie Vanderveeken walked into an open puck directly after a faceoff and rifled one past Campbell's left at 6:47. Jon Pelle scored on a similar shot, ringing under the left corner of the goal, at 16:28. The five-on-three goals highlighted a period in which Rapid City received five power plays to the Thunder's one.
Wichita came within one goal in the third when Joel Hanson ripped a shot from the slot past Danny Battochio at 2:26 after getting setup by Troy Ofukany from behind the net. Rapid City answered back at 10:27 when Dave Grimson flipped a shot from the point just under the crossbar to make it 4-2. The Thunder again rallied within one at 13:28. This time Jason Woll found the back of the net, scoring on a shot from the point. The Rush answered for a second time on a breakaway goal from Luke Erickson at 14:33, giving Rapid City a 5-3 lead. Wichita had over two minutes of five on three in the closing minutes of regulation, but were unable to convert.
Scott Campbell saw 45 shots in the loss, saving 40 of them. Danny Battochio stopped 19 of 22 in the win. Wichita went 0 for 5 on the power play, while Rapid City was 3 for 9. Woll's goal was his first of the season.
