Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas Travelers beat the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 12-9 in the series-finale on Wednesday night at Dickey-Stephens Park
All nine Travs starters reached base at least twice, with eight of the nine having at least one hit and at least one run scored.
Trailing 4-1 midway through the fourth, Arkansas plated five in the fourth and four in the fifth to open up an 11-4 lead.
The Naturals, however, continued to fight back. Northwest Arkansas scored twice in the sixth, once in the seventh and twice in the eighth to make it a 12-8 game. With the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, LHP Greg Mahle (S, 11) was called upon to get the Travs out of the jam with the tying run at the plate. Mahle induced an RBI groundout and flyout to end the frame with Arkansas leading 12-9.
Mahle surrendered a two-out single in the ninth, but the Naturals never brought the tying run to the plate again.
SS Drew Maggi finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, his third three-hit game this season for Arkansas.
1B Wade Hinkle delivered two-run knocks in both the fourth and fifth innings and finished 2-for-5 with a double and four RBIs.
CF Chad Hinshaw went 2-for-5 with three runs scored, a double and two runs batted in. He also stole his seventh base of the season. Hinshaw has reached base safely in all eight games since being activated off the Disabled List.
2B Sherman Johnson finished 2-for-5 with a walk, a run, two RBIs and a run scored.
With two hits including a double, RF Cal Towey has reached base safely in 13 straight games for the Travs. Towey also scored twice.
LF Ruben Sosa drew three walks.
Naturals 3B Hunter Dozier went 4-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored, three RBIs and two doubles.
The Travelers finished 7-for-20 with runners in scoring position.
RHP Kyle McGowin improved to 7-7 on the season with five innings of work. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
With the win, Arkansas improved to 6-1 over its last seven games, 54-48 on the season and 18-15 in the second half, one game ahead of Springfield in the second half standings. The Travs will begin a four-game series with the Tulsa Drillers at Dickey-Stephens Park on Thursday. First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
