Travelers Strike Early to Edge Drillers
July 30, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers struggles with the Arkansas Travelers continued Thursday night in the opening game of a seven-game road trip. The Drillers were limited to only five hits and were defeated by the Travelers 3-1 at North Little Rock's Dickey-Stephens Stadium. The loss left Tulsa with a 7-17 record against the Travelers this season.
The offensive output from the Travs came early in the game against Tulsa starting pitcher Jeremy Kehrt. They scored single runs in three straight innings to take a lead they would not relinquish.
The first run came in the bottom of the second when Brian Hernandez led off with a double and eventually scored on a two-base hit from Cal Towey.
The Travelers doubled their lead in third. With one out, Blake Gailen singled and eventually scored on a double just inside the first-base foul line by Raywilly Gomez.
The lead swelled to 3-0 in the fourth when Anthony Bemboom led off with a double and scored on a one-out base hit from Chad Hinshaw.
Tulsa's lone run came courtesy of Lars Anderson in the eighth inning. Anderson belted a two-out, solo home run, his 9th of the season, to trim the Arkansas lead to 3-1.
Arkansas starting pitcher Chris Ellis surrendered only three hits while working 6.2 shutout innings in only his ninth Double-A start. The victory improved his record to 5-1.
Danny Reynolds worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the top of the ninth to record his 6th save.
Kehrt's record fell to 6-8 with the loss. He allowed the three runs on ten hits in only 4.1 innings.
Ramon Benjamin, Jorge De Leon and Jacob Rhame combined for 3.2 scoreless innings in relief of Kehrt.
Kyle Farmer was the only Tulsa player with more than one hit in the game, finishing 2-3.
It was a rare hitless game for Ronald Torreyes. He finished 0-4, only the 8th time in 42 appearances this season that he has been held without a hit.
The two teams will be back in action Friday night. Jharel Cotton (4-2, 2.27 ERA) will be on the mound for the Drillers, while the Travelers will counter with Nate Smith (8-4, 2.54 ERA). Tulsa has handed Smith half of his four losses this season.
Starting time Friday in North Little Rock is scheduled for 7:10PM.
