Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas -- Blake Johnson and two relief pitchers combined on the Albuquerque Isotopes second shutout of the season, a 6-0 triumph over the Round Rock Express on Tuesday night at Dell Diamond.
In a matchup of the fifth-best ERA in the Pacific Coast League against the eighth-best ERA, it was the Isotopes' Johnson who outdueled Express starter Brad Mills.
Johnson allowed three hits in five scoreless innings, walked one and struck out five. Johnson (6-3) faced two batters over the minimum. Johnson has allowed four runs in his last 30 innings, and lowered his ERA to 3.10 this year.
Kelvin De La Cruz pitched the next three innings without allowing a run. De La Cruz retired the first seven batters that he faced, struck out five and allowed one hit.
Steve Ames worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning, getting help from a diving stop by shortstop Dee Gordon and throw to first for the second out.
Matt Wallach, who caught the shutout behind the plate, led the offense with three hits and a walk. Wallach hit his third home run of the season in the fourth inning.
Leading 2-0, the Topes broke the game open in the seventh inning. Tony Gwynn, Jr. doubled home a run, Matt Angle doubled home a run, and Brian Barden's two-run single capped the scoring. Rusty Ryal finished with three hits, a run and an RBI.
It was the 11th consecutive game the Isotopes have alternated between a win and a loss.
